Broadway Apartment
New York City is synonymous with Art Deco. The early 20th-century movement’s clean lines, rigorous rhythms, and geometries can be found in so many buildings across the city, and these elements make for a definitive foundation for contemporary interiors. Inside 270 Broadway, a 1930s building that epitomizes the style, Magdalena Keck designed an apartment on the 18th floor that leans into and highlights these defining features and uses historical references from the period as inspirational guides for her design, but without using period furnishings.
The clients desired a space that was at once classy, elegant, minimal, yet comfortable and human-centered. Adverse to clutter but with impressive collections of art and silver to display, the project involved a thoughtful consideration of which pieces to showcase and where, as well as providing enough storage to keep the remainder out of sight. Another key component required reconciling various overlapping planes and structural elements to ensure all spaces feel cohesive and balanced while celebrating the 28 windows that wrap the residence on three sides.
